Town of Tredòs

The last town in the Naut Aran, before reaching the ski slopes of Baqueira Beret, Tredòs is the ideal starting point for enjoying the Val d’Aran and exploring the trails, peaks and hills that bring you closer to the more than 30 lakes in mountain dotting the Circo de Colomers, the entrance to the Aigües Tortes National Park. The route continues along the banks of Aiguamog and reaches the famous Baños de Tredòs, sulphurous waters with therapeutic properties, as the Romans were able to verify.

The parish church of Santa María de Cabo de Tredós reveals on its exterior features of the Lombard Romanesque from the 11th-13th century. The presence of a crypt in the lower part of the altar and the location of the bell tower set apart from the body of the religious building make it a must-see in the municipality. Tredós is also synonymous with small traditional houses perfectly integrated into the landscape, with neighbors who are respectful of their natural environment and of balance.

Located at the foot of the steep Pui de Unha, Unha has among its architectural heritage the Romanesque church of Santa Eulària, with a square base and a beautiful octagonal tower dating from 1755 and ending in the shape of a bulb with an oriental air.

In the municipality we also find a group of Aranese-style houses where the old fortified manor house known as Çò de Brastet stands out, with doors and windows from the Renaissance period. Also noteworthy are the Snow Museum and the Era Mòla mill, currently restored and one of the great tourist attractions of the town.

The via ferrata in the Pui de Unha is the sports attraction of the area. It has a large number of participants who visit it and then enjoy typical Aranese gastronomy in one of the seven restaurants located in this small town.

Town of Bagergue

Located at 1,419 meters, Bagergue is the highest inhabited town in the Val d’Aran. Perched on a natural terrace, surrounded by meadows and dense forests, the town, like something out of a story, is characterized by its streets adorned with flowers of all kinds.

The old town is part of the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. Among its buildings, the parish church of Sant Feliu stands out, of Romanesque origin; the private ethnological museum, Eth Corrau, with 2,500 ancient objects related to daily life; and the hermitage of Santa Margarida, where they go on a pilgrimage every July 20. Due to its unbeatable location, Bagergue presents a good range of possibilities, both in summer and winter.

Town of Salardú

Salardú, capital of the municipality of Naut Aran, was a fortified town during medieval times. From this period, a part of the wall and the portal of Pallars are still preserved. With a population of 462 inhabitants, its nucleus is Baqueira with 177 inhabitants. From Salardú there is an entrance to the Aigüestortes National Park and to Lake Sant Maurici, which offers a great possibility of routes and walks.

At the top of the town is the church of Sant Andreu. It is located where there used to be the castle, of which only the remains remain today. Inside, the Romanesque carving of the famous Christ of Salardú is preserved. Other attractions in the town are the 19th-century fountain in the Plaza Mayor and a flour mill typical of the region, which has been restored to show visitors how it worked.

Salardú has different public and private garden areas, where the municipal swimming pool garden, the Ruda school garden, the Sant Andreu church or the Mòla children’s play area stand out. In addition, all the terraces of the bars and restaurants are full of flowers, and the hotels and houses of the town have the custom to decorate the facades and balconies with flowers.

In the town there are two parts: the old town made up of narrow streets, typical Aranese houses, ornamental fountains and old huts where cows and sheep still lived not long ago; and the communities of owners, with houses and apartments of typical Aranese construction with gardens with trees and flowers.

The center of Baqueira is characterized by large garden areas with native trees and where a botanical walk stands out, with an explanatory guide included, created two years ago by all the gardens in the center.

As news, last year a river walk along the Unhòla river was recovered, which connects with the town of Unha by means of a suspension bridge. For this course, it is planned to launch a campaign to promote composting in the municipality.

Town of Gessa

Gessa is characterized by its narrow and sloping streets, by its typical Aranese houses, with ornamental fountains and old huts with a patio. The main square stands out, with the church of Sant Peir, and a medieval building from the 16th century, Çò de Rósa, a construction of military origin with a cylindrical tower. You cannot miss visiting the old lauder, the fountain on Calle Sant Martí and the fountain on Plaza Madalena.

If you like excursions, from the town there are two essential ones. In just over an hour you can reach the hermitage of San Martín de Corilha, a construction integrated into the rock of the mountain and at about 1,800 meters above sea level. Another route passes through the Montromies cabin, a wooded area full of fir and pine trees from where different itineraries leave on foot and downhill bicycle tracks.

The old town of Arties maintains the traditional characteristics of stone buildings and slate roofs. The church of Santa María de Arties, from the 12th century, stands out at the top. It is a good example of the overlapping of different styles: from its oldest Romanesque nave and the splendid five-story Gothic tower with a large clock, to the Baroque altarpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries that can be seen inside. .

Next to it, another church stands out, that of San Juan, which is a harmonious ensemble in the purest Gothic style. The town center has the most notable Renaissance houses in the Val d’Aran.

Town of Garòs

Located at an altitude of 1,115 metres, Garòs is located at the foot of the Espiargo mountain, on the right bank of the Garona River. Among the main attractions of this small town are the necropolis with paleo-Christian remains and the church of Sant Julià. Of Romanesque origin and reformed in the 15th century, it has a bell tower from 1619 that emulates a defense tower.

In front of the church you can see the bust of Mossèn Jusèp Amiell, the work of the Aranese sculptor Gloria Corona Socasau in recognition of the entire career of this honorable resident of Garòs who, among others, was awarded the Lengua Viva Prize in 2004, the Medal Gold from the Conselh Generau d’Aran in 2010 and the Cross of Saint George from the Generalitat of Catalonia in 2012.
